A magazine shaped by shadow, form and emotion
A strong monochrome photograph does more than remove colour. It directs attention: to the structure of a garment, the tension in a pose, the texture of skin or the space around a subject. ARTNOIR looks for photographs that use those choices with intention.
Before selecting your series, explore our featured editorial and selected covers. These examples show our visual direction; your submission should bring its own identity.
What photography can you submit?
- Fashion and beauty editorials with distinctive styling, shape and atmosphere.
- Portrait photography that communicates character through expression, gesture and light.
- Fine-art photography built around a considered visual idea.
- Monochrome series with a coherent tonal language, from deep blacks to restrained, luminous greys.
- Moody and muted-colour stories that share ARTNOIR’s noir sensibility.
Does every photograph have to be black-and-white?
No. Black-and-white and monochrome remain our primary identity, but ARTNOIR is not exclusively black-and-white. We also consider atmospheric colour work: subdued palettes, dark tones and noir-inspired imagery with a cohesive mood.
Choose the treatment that serves the story. A colour series does not need an arbitrary black-and-white conversion to be considered. If you mix treatments, make sure the transition feels deliberate rather than like two unrelated shoots.
Build a sequence, not a folder of near-duplicates
Begin with the photograph that best establishes your idea. Follow it with images that develop the story through a change in distance, gesture, composition or detail. Remove weaker repetitions, even if they come from the same shoot.
Look at the series together. Do the tones belong to the same world? Does every frame add something? Is the final image a convincing ending? A tightly edited sequence makes your intention easier to understand.
